THE CITY’s staff is united by a common mission: reporting hard-hitting stories that serve the people of New York.

We’ve assembled a team whose members bring a rich mix of work and life experiences, as well as hail from a variety of backgrounds.

We present the data below in keeping with the transparency we demand from others. We also present it in keeping with the growing practice of news organizations, nonprofit and otherwise, that report internal demographic numbers at a time when our profession largely lags in reflecting the U.S. population. We’re dedicated to starting out by sharing this evolving look at who we are. The figures below are drawn from a voluntary staff survey focused on race and gender. Twenty out of 21 employees participated. Over time, this survey may expand to include other aspects of identity or life experience.

Ultimately, we ask to be judged by our work – work we believe is made all the stronger by efforts to field a team that reflects the city we cover.
